This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of developing research competence for Geography Teacher Education students at Vinh University through the implementation of a course project themed on assessing tourist satisfaction in Hoi An Ancient Town. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving six students undertaking the project, two supervising lecturers, and five members of the project evaluation committee. Data were collected using self-assessment questionnaires, observation checklists, and the committee’s evaluation rubric, combined with qualitative analysis and descriptive statistics. The results indicate significant improvements in students’ research competence, including designing research outlines, collecting and analyzing data, applying critical thinking, and proposing evidence-based solutions. The study affirms the feasibility of project-based learning in enhancing both academic and practical competencies for Geography Teacher Education students in a training context oriented toward application.
