Abstract

Confucian educational thought has a significant influence on Vietnamese education. Classroom management is fundamental to effective teaching and learning. This study used a questionnaire based survey of 228 parents whose children were attending primary schools in Hanoi to assess the extent of the influence of Confucian educational thought on the classroom management of contemporary primary school teachers. The results show that parents rated the influence of Confucian educational thought as moderate and as tending to facilitate teachers’ classroom management. Alongside facilitating factors such as maintaining classroom discipline, encouraging student participation and creativity, fostering equal communication in classroom relationships, and engaging students in practical and relatable lessons, there are also inhibiting factors such as theoretical and dogmatic teaching, an emphasis on disciplinary management with punishment for students who make mistakes, a reluctance to allow unanticipated learning situations to arise, and a focus on student errors. The findings provide scientific evidence and a basis for proposing teacher professional development strategies in the context of Vietnam’s ongoing general education reform toward the development of learners’ qualities and competencies.
