Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a parent coaching program in enhancing parents’ interaction skills with children with autism spectrum disorder during early intervention in Vietnam. An A–B–C single-case design was employed across three cases, targeting key interaction skills including commenting, language expansion, effective requesting, and praising. Data were collected through video observations and analyzed using visual analysis in combination with quantitative indices (NAP and Tau-U). The results indicated that most targeted skills improved markedly during the intervention phase, with effects ranging from moderate to very strong and showing replication across cases. During the maintenance phase, the mean scores of the skills generally remained higher than baseline. However, high overlap indices across several skills indicated limited differences between the maintenance and intervention phases. The findings provide empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of parent coaching programs in improving interaction skills among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder within the Vietnamese family context. The study also highlights the need for ongoing support strategies to promote the maintenance of parental interaction skills following the coaching program.
