Abstract

The strong development of trade and investment relations between Vietnam and Taiwan has boosted migration flows between the two countries. According to the Taiwan Immigration Agency, the number of new Vietnamese residents in Taiwan in July 2024 is 118,939, leading to the growth of a generation of children with one Vietnamese parent. This study, based on in-depth interviews with 29 students who are children of new Vietnamese residents and 5 university graduates, aims to explore their motivations for learning Vietnamese and the opportunities and challenges they encounter. The study also proposes measures to promote and strengthen the Vietnamese language education in Taiwan. It also emphasises the role of family, community, and educational policies in preserving cultural identity for the generation of children of new Vietnamese residents in Taiwan.
