Trên cơ sở nghiên cứu nguồn tài liệu lưu trữ của chính quyền thực dân Pháp thời thuộc địa, bài báo tập trung làm rõ những khó khăn trong vận tải đường thủy trên sông Mekong, các biện pháp của chính quyền thực dân Pháp nhằm cải tạo dòng sông này và các dịch vụ vận tải đường thủy được tổ chức ở Lào từ năm 1893 đến 1945. Với sự cải thiện của các dịch vụ vận tải đường thủy ở Lào, hoạt động thương mại trên sông Mekong có sự tiến triển trong thời kì thuộc địa. Trong khoảng ba thập niên đầu thế kỉ XX, sông Mekong đóng vai trò chính trong vận chuyển hàng hóa và hành khách ở Lào. Tuy nhiên, hệ thống thác ghềnh Kemmarat trên sông Mekong vẫn là những chướng ngại vật mà tàu thuyền khó có thể vượt qua vào mùa nước thấp. Vì vậy, chính quyền thực dân Pháp sau đó đã chuyển trọng tâm sang phát triển đường bộ ở Lào.
