Trồng và xuất khẩu cao su là một trong lĩnh vực kinh tế quan trọng nhất ở Việt Nam thời Pháp thuộc. Tuy nhiên, cho tới nay, chưa có nghiên cứu nào tập đề cập tới lĩnh vực này những năm 1929 – 1933. Nội dung và cũng là điểm mới của bài viết là không đề cập tới toàn bộ các vấn đề của lịch sử trồng và xuất khẩu cao su, vốn đã được nghiên cứu nhiều, mà tập trung phân tích làm rõ một khía cạnh nhỏ, cụ thể chưa được quan tâm nghiên cứu, đó là nguyên nhân, biểu hiện, hệ quả của những khó khăn trong lĩnh vực trồng và xuất khẩu cao su ở Việt Nam do tác động của cuộc khủng hoảng kinh tế thế giới trong giai đoạn 1929 – 1933. Điểm mới khác là nghiên cứu được thực hiện trên cơ sở khai thác nguồn tư liệu tiếng Pháp, đa phần là nguồn tài liệu sơ cấp – tài liệu lưu trữ, chưa được công bố rộng rãi. Trên cơ sở nội dung, hướng tiếp cận, nguồn sử liệu mới, kết quả nghiên cứu góp phần bổ sung nhận thức mới về lịch sử Việt Nam cận đại, bản chất của chế độ thực dân, số phận của những lao động làm thuê người Việt trong các cơ sở kinh tế của tư bản Pháp.
