VIETNAMESE MUTUAL ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATIONS IN CAMBODIA IN THE 1920s AND 1930s

Based on an examination of the charters of Vietnamese Mutual Assistance Associations in Cambodia in the 1920s and 1930s, this article aims to examine the emergence as well as the diversity of Vietnamese Associations in Cambodia. During the 1920s and 1930s, numerous Vietnamese Mutual Aid Associations were established, including those based on place of origin, occupation and religion. An analysis of the founding purposes and operational regulations of these associations indicates that, although they were established with the permission of the French colonial authorities, they primarily functioned as organizations with significant socio-cultural functions. Their activities reflected traditional Vietnamese cultural values among overseas communities, including mutual support in times of hardship, illness, unemployment and misfortune, as well as the maintenance of spiritual practices such as ancestor worship and Buddhist observance. Through these activities, networks among Vietnamese migrants were formed, providing assistance to newly arrived migrants in Cambodia and to those facing difficulties while living abroad. Consequently, these Associations contributed to the development of a highly cohesive overseas Vietnamese community.
