HISTORICAL NARRATOLOGY: CREATING THE FACTS IN NARRATIVES AND HISTORY

Historical narratology, or historiographical narratology, is a prominent trend in post-classical narratology, emerging from the integration of narratology and historiography. At the core of this integration - between two seemingly opposing domains, fictional literature and the discipline of factual history - are notions of experience and personalization. This article explores the key features/elements within the respective paradigm shifts of each discipline, thereby shedding light on the emergence of historical narratology as a methodological approach in contemporary literary studies. Specifically, it addresses: (1) Experience, the individual, and truth; (2) The historiographical turn: History as narrative; and (3) The narratological turn (the linguistic turn): the shift toward narrative discourse and the incorporation of contextual elements.
