THE POLITICAL ROLE OF NOBLE WOMEN UNDER THE TRẦN DYNASTY (1226-1400)

Abstract

This study analyzes the political roles of noblewomen during the Trần Dynasty (1226–1400), based on a comparative survey of historical sources from Vietnam’s monarchical period. Noblewomen during this period were those granted titles such as empress, consort, or princess. The characteristics of the aristocratic monarchy, along with cultural factors such as Confucianism and Buddhism, shaped the political functions of noblewomen. These women played key roles in political marriages, ranging from intra-dynastic alliances to inter-state unions, and were directly involved in state affairs in exceptional circumstances. The findings of this study offer a foundation for further exploration into gender dynamics within the political power structure of Vietnam’s monarchical history.
