The article uses the Reference Theory of Pragmatics to clarify how language refers to characters in a specific literary work. This is a new direction based on previous achievements in researching the characteristics and functions of story language. Using the above principle to study the quantification of the attributes in character building of the short story Drops of Blood can help readers and researchers recognize the beauty of the words and the writer's creativity. Besides, this direction also helps the writer improve the theoretical toolkit to continue to contribute more to the story research process from the linguistic perspective.
