Abstract

Since the last decade of the twentieth century, some literary researchers have applied cognitive science to literature to reveal hidden values in literary texts. In particular, conceptual metaphor is a useful tool to help researchers discover the aesthetic and intellectual values in literary works. This article studies the conceptual metaphor denoting death in the detective novels of Thomas Harris. Surveying indirect expressions denoting death helps form a mapping model between death and artwork. The article focuses on clarifying the unique values of Harris’ detective novels related to the concept of death in the antagonist's cognition, studying the conceptual metaphor death is artwork, thereby highlighting the writer's creative ability as well as the messages in the novel. In doing so, studying the conceptual metaphor “death is artwork” in Thomas Harris's novels contributes to bringing a new perspective eliminating the prejudice that detective literature is only a literary genre for "amusement".
