PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE IN DATING RELATIONSHIP AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

This study investigates the prevalence and manifestations of psychological violence in dating relationships among university students, and the factors associated with such violence. The study employed a cross-sectional design using convenience sampling. A total of 333 first- to fourth-year undergraduate students from several universities in Hanoi completed a questionnaire developed by the research team. The results using descriptive and inferential statistical methods showed that students in the sample experienced psychological violence in dating relationships, mostly at a moderate level (M = 1.92), with tolerance of controlling behavior being the most common manifestation (M = 1.96). The level of psychological violence in dating relationships among students did not differ according to criteria such as gender, year of study, and field of study. Among the factors influencing the risk of inflicting psychological violence on a partner, cultural factors and gender stereotypes had the greatest influence (r = 0.64), whereas attachment style had the greatest impact (r = 0.47) on the tendency to tolerate psychological violence. Simultaneously, there was an overlap in roles between the perpetrator and the victim. The causes and discussion of the research results are also addressed in this paper.
