ECONOMIC CRISIS IN VIETNAM 1929-1933: A CASE STUDY OF RUBBER CULTIVATION AND EXPORT

Rubber cultivation and export constituted one of the most important economic sectors in Vietnam during the French colonial period. However, to date, no research has focused on the crisis in this sector during the years 1929-1933. The study focuses not on addressing all aspects of the history of rubber cultivation and export, which have been extensively studied, but instead on analyzing and clarifying a small, specific aspect that has received little attention: the causes, manifestations, and consequences in the rubber cultivation and export sector in Vietnam during the period 1929-1933. Another novelty is that the research is conducted based on the use of French-language sources, mostly primary sources – archival documents that have not been widely published. Based on the content, approach, and new sources of information, the research results contribute to a better understanding of modern Vietnamese history, the nature of the colonial regime, and the fate of Vietnamese hired laborers in French capitalist enterprises.
