TRADE COMPETITION AMONG CHINA, THE UNITED STATES, AND JAPAN IN THE MEKONG SUBREGION (2008–2024)

The Mekong Subregion, characterized by its strategic geopolitical position, abundant natural resources, and rapid economic development, is increasingly attracting attention from world major powers. During the period 2008–2024, the involvement of China, the United States, and Japan in the Mekong Subregion has become more pronounced, particularly in commerce, which most directly reflects the intensity of economic influence of major powers. Drawing on a systematic review of domestic and international academic studies, together with an analysis of United Nations International Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade), this article examines the economic and strategic interests of the three powers, the scale and pace of market expansion, as well as the key sectors and trade competition strategies in the Mekong Subregion. Based on this analysis, the study identifies the main characteristics and broader implications of the competition.
